Refurbishing the Etandweni Health Post

The Etandweni Health Post, located in the Mzimba district of Malawi, was a derelict facility providing child immunisations, general health advice and family planning services.

Since completing a refurbishment in 2011, Globe sought the assistance of local groups to boost the capacity of the facility.

In January 2012, advice from the Australia Africa Mining Industry Group led to a successful grant application for A$29,000 from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to install solar electricity and a vaccine fridge at the Health Post.

In addition, a scoping exercise undertaken in Malawi, with the assistance of Professor Mark Jones, Director of the Global Health Alliance of WA, identified a number of development options for health focused corporate social responsibility.

Donating to the Kanyika School

Kanyika School is located in Mzimba district about 2.5 hours’ drive from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi.

A public school in the Vazala Education Zone, Kanyika caters to 740 primary students and 160 secondary students with a staggering 350 of these children being orphans.

Globe has a long history with Kanyika School which is located just a short distance from our Kanyika Niobium Project, and continues to provide support where possible.

In 2009 Globe provided the Kanyika Secondary College with 100 desks as prioritised by the community at the time. Building materials were provided to local carpenters were paid to construct the desks, supporting local businesses.

Installing Water Pumps in the Machinga Area

In October 2012, two water pumps were installed in the Machinga area. One pump was installed at the primary school; the other was installed at Chaphuka to be used by the local community.

The Malawi National Policy of Water dictates the community must take the responsibility to maintain the hand pump and must also be involved in the construction and installation of the hand pump.

The community will be in charge of maintenance, health and safety and management of monthly contributions to buy new parts for the pump.
